Narrative Reports

Do you ever take the ‘easy way’ to do something? Well, I do all of the time when it comes to writing about an ancestor. For quite a few years, I’ve been letting my genealogy software compose the narrative.

I first learned to take advantage of turning the events into sentences and thus into a narrative while using The Master Genealogist. Second Site software would take my genealogy data in TMG and turn it into a narrated web site.

Knowing that my web page was being built from the sentences, I would use the individual narrative report to ‘proofread’ the information that would be pulled for the web.

When I converted to Roots Magic, I elected to use their ‘My RootsMagic‘ hosting service. Posting my genealogy data is quick and easy. The data is posted as a list of events versus a narrative. I am trying to incorporate the narratives for my direct ancestors on my blog. To set up the report, I was selecting ‘Ancestors only’ and ‘1 generation’.

The report generated from these settings was almost what I wanted. It was only after carefully reading a report that I discovered that the marriage information was missing.

I posted on the RootsMagic Users Facebook group to learn more about marriage information in narrative reports. It was from other users that I learned that the narrative for ‘shared events’ is placed at the end of the narrative for individual events and only if the report is for both parties of the shared event.

One user suggested sharing the marriage event with the parties to the marriage. This would place the marriage event in chronological order in the narrative report. At this time, I haven’t figured out how to structure the sentence for the shared event. Thus, I haven’t shared the marriage event.

Other users suggested changing the settings for the report to descendants for 1 generation. Then, once the report is generated, the extra people can be deleted. By using this solution, I can move the marriage info to the correct location in the document. This method also requires carefully editing the Endnotes to remove those that apply to just the spouse.

It has taken me a couple of weeks to get the narrative and endnotes cleaned up for the ancestor I was working with – but I will get it posted soon. I’m very thankful to the RootsMagic Users Facebook community for helping me learn more about the narrative reports!

 

Tax Roles

I’ve been trying to learn more about my ancestor, John Thompson (1797-1857) in hopes of identifying his parents. He married Sarah Iglehart in 1820 in Ohio County, Kentucky. Thus, I wanted to learn more about any Thompsons in Ohio County, Kentucky around the time of this marriage.

Fortunately, the Ohio County, Kentucky Tax Books, 1799-1875 are available for viewing on Family Search. Even though these images aren’t indexed, it was fairly easy to find the images for the ‘T’ portion of the alphabet. (Note: I also recorded information for the Igleharts while viewing this resource.)

I found a John Thompson listed in 1820. This John Thompson was over 21 and owned a horse.

In 1821, the only Thompson’s I found were a John Tompson and a John Thompson — both over 21 with John Tompson owning a horse. In 1822, there was only 1 Thompson (Tompson) listing — John Thompson with two horses. In 1823, John Thompson still owned 2 horses but he also owned 50 acres of land on the Rough watercourse.

In 1824, John Thompson was listed with 2 horses and NO LAND. A James Tomson was also listed.

In 1825, there weren’t any Thompsons listed on the tax role. This was true of 1826, 1827 and 1828.

Since it has been a while since I’ve used tax records in my research, I used the Family Search wiki for Kentucky Tax Records to learn more about these records and what they might be telling me about John Thompson.

From the data I collected, I now have more questions:

• Is the John Thompson in the tax record the father of James Thompson? If so, then the John Thompson in the tax record would not be my ancestor.
• Could John Thompson and James Thompson be brothers? If so, then the John Thompson in the tax record could be my ancestor?
• Who was the 2nd John Thompson (Tompson) in 1821? Is this a father/son situation?
• Is the John Thompson in these tax records from 1820 to 1824 my ancestor?

At this point, I don’t have enough information to determine whether these tax records are for my John Thompson.

Charles Oliver Mentzer

     Charles Oliver Mentzer was born on 1 Jul 1869 in Kewanee, Henry, Illinois, United States.^{1–12 1,10,13–14} He lived in Kewanee, Henry, Illinois, United States on 23 Aug 1870.¹⁵ Chas O Mentzer was listed in the household of Geo Mentzer on the 1870 census. According to the census, Chas was 1 year old and born in Illinois. He lived in Woodson, Kansas, United States in 1871.²

In 1880, Charles was educated at school district no. 44 in Woodson County, Kansas, United States.¹⁶ He lived in Center Township, Woodson, Kansas, United States on 11 Jun 1880.¹⁷ Charles Mentzer is listed as the 11 year old son of Geo Mentzer in the 1880 census. Charles was born in Illinois. He lived in Center Township, Woodson, Kansas, United States on 1 Mar 1885.¹⁸

Charles  resided in 1891 in Henry, Illinois, United States .² for about 12 months He  visited Shenandoah, Iowa in Sep 1891.¹⁹ He had been sourjouring in Iowa, Nebraska and Illinois for some months in 1892.²⁰

On 18 Oct 1893, Charles married Nettie Adell Wells. The marriage took place at his parents home in Woodson County, Kansas.

Charles lived at NE 1/4 S36T24R14 in Woodson, Kansas, United States in Nov 1893.^2,12 After 1893 he was a farmer in North Township, Woodson, Kansas, United States.² He lived in North Township, Woodson, Kansas, United States on 1 Jul 1895.²¹ He was listed on the 1895 census as a 24 year old male farmer born in Illinois who came to Kansas from Illinois and was listed as Chas O. Mentzer. ²²

Charles lived in North Township, Woodson, Kansas, United States on 26 Jun 1900.²³ He was listed on the 1900 census as a 31 year old male farmer born July 1868 in IL and was listed as Charles Mentzer. He  purchased land from George Mentzer and Emeline Mentzer his wife being the NE 1/4 of Section Thirty-six (36) in Township Twenty-four (24) South of Range Fourteen (14) East of sixth (6) PM on 28 May 1903 in Woodson, Kansas, United States.²⁴ He  owned land being the NE 1/4 of section 36 in township 24 South of Range 14 East in 1904 in North Township, Woodson, Kansas, United States.²⁵ Charles lived in Neosho Falls Township, Woodson, Kansas, United States on 1 Jul 1905.²⁶ He was on the 1905 Kansas census as a 35 year old male farmer born in Illinois who was listed as C. O. Mentzer.

He lived in Liberty Township, Coffey, Kansas, United States on 27 Apr 1910.²⁷ He was on the 1910 census as a 41 year old male farm laborer who was born in Illinois and had been married 16 years. He was listed as Charles O. Mentzer on the census record. He lived in Crandall, Coffey, Kansas on 22 Jan 1912.²⁸

Charles rented the Mrs. H. Harreld farm in Crandall, Coffey, Kansas on 1 Mar 1913.²⁹ He lost a cow on 25 Mar 1913 in Crandall, Coffey, Kansas.³⁰

He entertained daughters Pauline and Gladys on 17 May 1914 in Crandall, Coffey, Kansas.³¹

Charles received $150 from The Topeka Mutual Live Stock Insurance Company for death of live stock in 1915 in Coffey, Kansas, United States.³² He lived in Neosho Township, Coffey, Kansas, United States on 1 Jul 1915.³³ He was on the 1915 Kansas census as a 45 year old male farmer born in Kansas who was listed as C. O. Mentzer.

He lived in Everett Township, Woodson, Kansas, United States in 1919.³⁴ Charles lived in Everett Township, Woodson, Kansas, United States on 10 Feb 1920.³⁵ He was on the 1920 census as a 50 year old male farmer born Illinois and was listed as Charles O. Mentzer. He lived in Neosho Falls Township, Woodson, Kansas, United States in Sep 1921.³⁶ He lived in Everett Township, Woodson, Kansas, United States on 1 Jul 1925.⁶ He was on the 1925 Kansas census as a 57 year old male farmer born in Illinois.

On on 10 Jul 1926 Charles attended the Wells family reunion in Neosho Falls Township, Woodson, Kansas, United States.³⁷

He lived in Neosho Falls Township, Woodson, Kansas, United States on 2 May 1930.³⁸ He was on the 1930 census as a 60 year old male farmer born Illinois and was listed as Charles O. Mentzer. He lived in Neosho Falls Township, Woodson, Kansas, United States in 1937.³⁹ Charles lived in Neosho Falls Township, Woodson, Kansas, United States in 1938.⁴⁰

Charles lived in Emporia, Lyon, Kansas, United States in 1953.^56–57

He died on 15 Aug 1955 at the age of 86 at Newman Hospital in Emporia, Lyon, Kansas, United States.^1,5,7,58 He was buried on 18 Aug 1955 at Yates Center Cemetery in Yates Center, Woodson, Kansas, United States.^{1,5,7,59–61}

Range 14 East 6th PM Index

Have you ever had trouble documenting a father/son relationship? Or, have you had trouble separating records for men of the same name? My go to source in these situations has been the land records.

In Kansas, we are lucky in that most counties maintain what is called the Range Index. Basically, this is an index of the land transactions for the range. What is nice about this index is that each quarter section has its own page. Thus, it is easy to see how land was transferred over time.

Last August, I was able to travel to Woodson County, Kansas to track down a court case and to obtain copies of the land records for my Mentzer, Wells, and Ricketts families. Below is a transcription of the information found in the index for Range 14.
