Richmond F. Hammond

Richmond Fisk Hammond was born on 20 Nov 1840 in Licking, Ohio, United States.111 Richmond Hammond was listed on the 1850 US Census. It appears he is the sole member of the household since the rest of the family is not listed on the previous page. According to the census, Richmond was 10 years old and born in Ohio.12 Rich F Hammond is listed on the 1860 census in the household of Horatio Hammond. According to the 1860 census, Rich was 19 years old and born in Ohio.13

     He  began military service as a private in Company E 17 Ills  Vols on 25 May 1861 in Galesburg, Knox, Illinois, United States.11,1416 He was honorably discharged on 21 Aug 1861 in Missouri, United States.11 Richmond  reenlisted  in the 1st Illinois Cavalry Volunteers on 1 Mar 1862 .11,15,17 He was discharged from the 1st Illinois Cavalry Volunteers on 14 Jul 1862 in Saint Louis, St. Louis (city), Missouri, United States.11 He  enlisted as a private in Company H of the 102nd Infantry on 26 Jul 1862 in Galesburg, Knox, Illinois, United States.8,1719 Richmond deserted on 2 Sep 1862 at Knoxville, Knox, Illinois, United States.17 He enlisted as a private in Company D of the 14 Illinois Calvary on 29 Sep 1862.11,17 On 1 Mar 1863, he  was appointed Sergeant in company D 14 Illinois Cavalry.11 Richmond was captured near Atlanta, Georgia. on 3 Aug 1864 .11,20 He was held prisoner at Andersonville in Georgia, United States.11 He was held as a prisoner in Charleston, South Carolina.11 Richmond was held prisioner in Florence, South Carolina.11 In May 1865, he was stationed as part of a detachment of paroled prisioners at Benton Barracks in Benton, Missouri.11 He  was mustered out by telegram on 12 May 1865 in Springfield, Illinois.11

     He married Sarah Ellen Ralston on 1 Jan 1867 in Knoxville, Knox, Illinois, United States.2,2128

     On 6 Feb 1868, Estella Mabel Hammond was born in in Illinois, United States.27,29

     Richmond received pension  on 11 Apr 1868 .30

     On 28 Nov 1868, Forest Clinton Hammond was born in in Illinois, United States.27

     Richmond F Hammond was listed as the head of household on the 1870 U.S. Census. According to the census, Richmond was 29 years old and born in Ohio. Also listed in the household was Sarah, Stella, and Forrest Hammond.31

     On 23 Nov 1871, Nellie Elida Hammond was born in in Illinois, United States.27

     On 9 Feb 1874, Josie Winifred Hammond was born in in Knoxville, Knox, Illinois, United States.27 He was listed on the tax rolls in 1875 in Knoxville, Knox, Illinois, United States.32

     He witnessed the birth of Glenn M Hammond on 4 Sep 1877.2 Richmond witnessed the death of Glenn M Hammond on 11 Feb 1878.2

     On 11 Jun 1879, Clyde Nelson Hammond was born.27

     Richmond F Hammond was listed on the 1880 census as the head of household. According to the census, Richmond was a 39 year old farmer who was born in Ohio. Also living in the household was his wife, Sarah E, daughters: Estella M, Nellie E and Josie W; and sons: Forest C and Clyde N.33

     He lived in Kansas, United States in 1884.28 On 1 Oct 1885,  he filed notice of his intention to make final proof in support of his claim for the n-w1/4, s-e 1/4 and s-w 1/4 of n-e 1/4 and s-e 1/4 of n-w 1/4 and n-e 1/4 of s-w 1/4 of sec 20 tp 27 s of r 14 w in Larned, Pawnee, Kansas, United States.34 Richmond lived in Dodge City, Ford, Kansas, United States in 1886.10 On 31 Mar 1886, he was a member the Lewis Post G.A.R. in Dodge City, Ford, Kansas, United States.35 On 24 Jun 1886, he went to Hodgeman county to put up a farm house and was absent a few weeks.36

     On 21 Jan 1887, Richmond filed notice of his intention to make final proof in support of his claim and that said proof will be made for his Homestead Application for the lots 1 and 2 and S 1-2 N E 1/4 sec 6 Twp 27 S R26 W  in Dodge City, Ford, Kansas, United States.37 In Aug 1887,  he had the contract for building the new school houses in district No. 28 and in district no. 57 in Ford, Kansas, United States.38 He  was on list of petit jurors on 13 Nov 1888 in Dodge City, Ford, Kansas, United States.39

     Richmond  presented a program titled, “Profits of Sorghum for Feed and Syrup,” at Farmer’s Convention in Feb 1889 in Ford, Ford, Kansas, United States.4041 He was listed on the ‘Enrollment of Civil War Veterans’ on 8 Mar 1889 in Ford, Ford, Kansas, United States.20 On 5 Jun 1889, he was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic in Dodge City, Ford, Kansas, United States.20,42

     Richmond filed land papers regarding land being lots 1 and 2 and the S 1/2 of the NE 1/4 of Section 6 Township 27 Range 26 on 13 Dec 1889 in Ford, Ford, Kansas, United States.43

     He was member of the Lewis Post No. 294 G. A. R. serving as O.D. on 9 Jan 1890 in Dodge City, Ford, Kansas, United States.44

     He filed land entry papers full payment has been made for the northwest quarter of the south east quarter; the south west quarter of the north east quarter; the south east quarter of the north west quarter and the north east quarter of the south west quarter of section twenty in township twenty seven South of range fourteen West of the sixth Principal Meridian containing one hundred and sixty acres on 26 Feb 1890 in Kansas.4546

     In Mar 1891, Richmond received an increase in his pension in Kansas.47 He was the Commander of Lewis Post, G.A.R., has been appointed an aide de camp on the Staff of the National Commander of the G.A.R. in 1892.4849 He was called before the Kinsley medical pension board on 10 Feb 1892 .50

     Richmond was a member of the Grand Templar Lodge serving as Sentinel on 25 Mar 1892 in Dodge City, Ford, Kansas, United States.5152 In 1894, he was a member of the Lewis Post No. 394 Grand Army of Republic having served as a seargeant in the Illinois cavalry in Dodge City, Ford, Kansas, United States.5354

     On 1 Apr 1897, Hattie Louisa Hammond was born.27

     He married Mary McClure on 7 Nov 1897 in Dodge City, Ford, Kansas, United States.6,23,27,55 On 31 Dec 1897, he was a member of the Lewis Post of the G.A.R. in Dodge City, Ford, Kansas, United States.56

     Richmond Hammond was listed on the 1900 census as the head of household. According to the census, Richmond was born Nov 1840 in Ohio and was 59 years old. Mary was listed as Richmond’s second wife. Also in the household was a daughter, Hattie, a son Clyde, stepdaughters Gertrude and Olive Myers and a stepson, Allen Myers.57

     R F Hammond was listed on the 1905 Kansas census as the head of household. According to the census, R. F. Hammond was 64 years old. Also listed in his household were Forrest and Hattie Hammond.4 In 1906, Richmond was a member of the Lewis Post G.A.R. in Dodge City, Ford, Kansas, United States.58

     He married Mary A. Reynolds on 29 Oct 1906 in Kinsley, Edwards, Kansas, United States.27

     He  purchased land being lots 11 and 12 in block 18 on 4 Aug 1908 in Dodge City, Ford, Kansas, United States.59 In 1909, he resided  in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, United States.11

     Richmond sold land land being lots 11 and 12 of Block 18 on Wet Spruce Street to Margaret P. Glasgow on 29 Jan 1909 in Dodge City, Ford, Kansas, United States.60

     Richard F Hammond was listed on the 1910 census as the head of household living in Downey, Los Angeles County, California. According to the census, Richard was 69 years old and born in Ohio. Mary Hammond was listed as his second wife. Also listed in the household was his daughter, Hattie L. and a stepson Charles E Grim.61 He lived in Compton, Los Angeles, California, United States in 1914.5,6263

     He  was admitted to the soldiers’ home in Sawtelle, Los Angeles, California, United States on 8 Apr 1914.15 Richmond was discharged from Sawtelle Soldier’s home in Sawtelle, Los Angeles, California, United States on 21 Apr 1914.15 He was readmitted to Sawtelle Soldier’s home in Sawtelle, Los Angeles, California, United States on 26 Sep 1917. He was discharged from Sawtelle Soldier’s home in Sawtelle, Los Angeles, California, United States on 14 Apr 1920. Richmond was readmitted to Sawtelle Soldier’s home in Sawtelle, Los Angeles, California, United States on 26 Jul 1920.15 He was discharged from Sawtelle Soldier’s home in Sawtelle, Los Angeles, California, United States on 26 Apr 1922.15 He was admitted to Sawtelle Soldier’s home in Sawtelle, Los Angeles, California, United States on 28 Oct 1922.15 Richmond lived at Soldier’s Home in Sawtelle, Los Angeles, California, United States in 1926.64

     He died on 8 Apr 1928 in Sawtelle, Los Angeles, California, United States at the age of 87.3,7,11,6569 On 11 Apr 1928, he was buried at Los Angeles National Cemetery in Los Angeles, California, United States.3,66,6974
