He was stationed on Shemya Island as part of a maintenance crew for the Naval Air Station where they built an air strip.26

In May 1944, he left Shemya Island returning to Attu and then going on to San Francisco.26

In Sep 1944, Hugh left San Francisco and went to Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands as part of a base maintenance crew. While stationed at Dutch Harbor, the unit was split with one detail going to Cold Bay, Alaska to train Russians.26

His unit went to Kamchtka Peninsula in Siberia..26 While on Kamchatka, the crew took 2 groups of Russian observers to see American amphibious operations, combat tactics and amphibious landings. The detail observed landings at Leyte and Lynganian Gulf in the Philippines. The trip lasted about one month. The men went by air, then joined the ships in the task force and went by boat. One of those ships was the Enterprise aircraft carrier. The crew flew off of the Enterprise to return to Kamchatka.

He was released from active duty on 30 Jul 1945 at Camp Elliot in California, United States.26 After discharge, Hugh was given a class 1A rating in the U.S. Naval Reserves for ten years.

In 1952 Hugh and his family moved to Alaska to take a teaching job.27

In 1957, he was a member of the Alaska Education Association in Alaska, United States.28

In 1957 he was a teacher in Wainwright, North Slope, Alaska, United States.28

In 1963 Hugh taught on the Navajo reservation in Arizona.27
