Do you have photocopies from books that are missing the title page or any indication of the book title? Well, I do.

Today’s Friday Finds is a photocopy of a biography of Jesse Hall of the village of Cazenovia which is in Madison County, New York. While I don’t know of any HALL ancestors in the New York area in my tree, my ancestor, Thurston Kennedy Wells’ first wife was Sarah Hall. Since Thurston Wells lived in Madison County, I probably thought there might be a connection. Thus, the photocopies.

Fortunately, the heading “Our County and Its People” provided enough information for a Google search. I was able to locate the book and the biography on Archive.org and on Ancestry. The title of the book is Our County and Its People: A Descriptive and Biographical Record of Madison County, New York. This book was edited by John E. Smith and published by the Boston History Company in 1899

Below is a transcription of the biography.

Hall, Jesse Wilson, is one of the leading merchants of Cazenovia village, where he has been engaged in the jewelry business for a quarter of a century. Mr. Hall was born in New Berlin, Chenango County, New York, November 5, 1850. His father, also in Cazenovia in 1858, where he died in 1874. He was for eight years steward of Cazenovia Seminary. He was the son of Stephen R. Hall, a native of Dracut, Middlesex county, Mass. an early settler of Brookfield, who removed to that town in 1803, in a wagon, bringing his wife and family and was one of the earlier settlers of that town. Jesse W. was educated at Cazenovia Seminary and at the age of nineteen began to learn the jeweler’s trade with John Greenland, with whom he remained

one year, and was then for six years in the employ of W. H. Cruttenden, watchmaker and jeweler. He resided in Sherburne one year and in 1878 bought the jewelry business of the estate of John Greenland. In his store, which he purchased in 1882, he has done a successful business. He is an Odd Fellow of high standing and in politics has always been a staunch Republican. Mr. Hall served as town clerk fifteen consecutive years. In 1896 he was elected justice of the peace. He has served as trustee of the village, trustee of Cazenovia Seminary, and member of the board of education. He married, in 1880, Lucky Nichols Bailey, daughter of Lewis and Marietta (Nichols) Bailey.

Based on the information in the biography, I was able to locate Jesse Wilson Hall on Family Search. Thus, I was able to compare his tree to Sarah Hall‘s tree. While this biography is not relevant to my genealogy research, I hope it helps someone else!

Elusive David Hall Family

Jane Crawford, daughter of James and Rebecca (Anderson) Crawford married David Hall. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find much information on David and Jane Hall.David Hall¹ lived in Jefferson, Indiana, United States in 1820.²

He filed land entry papers for land being the East half of the Southwest quarter of section 25 Township 10 of Range 5 containing 80 acres on 24 Apr 1820 in Indiana, United States.³

He  purchased land being lot 104 in Columbus in 1823 in Bartholomew, Indiana, United States.⁴

David  purchased land being lot 63 in Columbus in 1823 in Bartholomew, Indiana, United States.⁵

He filed land entry papers for land being the West half of the Southwest quarter of Section 25 Township 10 of Range 5 containing 80 acres on 1 Jan 1823 in Indiana, United States.⁶

David Hall of Dearborn County, Indiana made full payment for the south West quarter of the North East quarter of Section seventeen in township six of Range two West in the District of lands subject to sale at Cincinnati, Ohio (lying in Indiana) containing 40 acres on 7 Nov 1837 in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, United States.⁷

David sold land being lot number 104 in Columbus on 1 Dec 1838 in Bartholomew, Indiana, United States.⁸

He sold land land being lot number 63 in Columbus on 2 Oct 1839 in Bartholomew, Indiana, United States.⁹

David Hall and Jane Crawford¹⁰ were married on 5 Jan 1814 in Jefferson, Indiana, United States.^1,11–17

Jane Crawford, daughter of James Crawford and Rebecca Anderson, was born about 1796.

She was the child of James Crawford and Rebecca Anderson.¹⁶

She was also known as Jane Hall on 5 Jan 1814.¹

Wherein David Hall of Jefferson County, Indiana
has deposited in the General Land Office of the United
States, a certificate of the Register of the Land Office at
Brookville, State of Indiana whereby it appears that
full payment has been made by the said David
Hall according tot he provisions of the Act of Con-
gress of the 24th of April 1820, entitled, “An act ma-
king further provision for the sale of the Public Lands
for the East half of the South West quarter of Section
twenty-five in Township ten, of Range five, in the
District of Brookville and State of Indiana containing

Eighty acres according to the official plat of the survey
of said Lands, returned to the General Land Office
by the Surveyor General which said tract of has been
purchased by the said David Hall — Now know
ye, that the United States of America, in consider-
ation of the premises and in conformity with the sev-
eral acts of Congress in such case made and provided
have given and granted and by these presents do give and
grant unto the said David Hall the said tract
above described: To have and to hold the same
together with all the rights, privileges, immunities and
appurtenances of whatsoever nature, thereunto be-
longing, unto the said David Hall and his heirs and
assigns forever.
In testimony whereof, I, James Monroe Pres-\
ident of the United States of America, have caused
these letters to be made Patent and the seal of the Gen-
eral Land Office to be hereunto affixed.

sealng hereby David Hall the receipt whereof I do hereby ac
knowledged have in my capacity as agent as aforesaid
and for and in behalf of the county of Bartholomew granted
bargained sold and conveyed and by these presents do grant
bargain sell and convey unto the said David Hall his heirs
and assignes forever the following described tract or parcel
or lot of land situated in the town of Columbus in said
county of Bartholomew known and designated on the plat of said
town by no Sixty three situated in the town of Columbus con-

taning eleven thousand two hundred and fifty square feet
to have and to hold the said tract or parcel or lot of land
with all the appurtenances and priveleges to the same belonging
to the said David Hall his heirs and assignes to his and
they own proper use benefit and behoof forever and
the said John Farquar in my said capacity and for and
in behalf of the said county of Bartholomew do hereby coven

This Indenture made this second day of October in the year of Our Lord
one thousand eight hundred and thirty nine between David Hall & Jane Hall his wife
of the County of Bartholomew and State of Indiana of the first part and William
Mounts of the County and State aforesaid of the second part witnesseth that the
said party of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of twenty dollars
to them in hand paid by the said party of the second part The receipt whereof is
hereby acknowledged have granted bargained and sold and by these presents do
grant bargain and sell unto the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns
forever the following described tract or lot of Land situate lying and being in
the town of Columbus and state aforesaid and being known and designated in the
plott of said Town as Lot numbered (63) sixty Three on Jackson street in said town

To have and to hold the said above described premises with all the ap-
purtenances to the same belonging to the said party of the second part and his
heirs and assigns forever and the said party of the first part for themselves and

to convey all her right of Dower in said premises, without any fear coercion
or compulsion from her said husband.

This Indenture made this first day of December, in the year of Our lord
one thousand eight hundred and thirty eight between David Hall and Jane Hall his wife
of the County of Bartholomew and State of Indiana of the first part and Solomon Shell
of the County of Bartholomew and State of Indiana of the second part witnesseth that
the said David Hall & Jane his wife for and in consideration of the sum of one hun-
dred dollars to him in hand paid by the said Solomon Shell the receipt whereof is
hereby acknowledged hath granted bargained and sold and by these presents doth
grant bargain and sell unto the said Solomon shell his heirs and assigns forever
the following described tract or parcel of land situate in the town of Columbus
in said County of Bartholomew, known and designated on the plat of said Town by lot
No. one hundred and four fronting on Walnut street seventy five feet and one hundred
and fifty feet back to an ally containing eleven thousand two hundred and fifty square
feet.
To have and to hold the above described premises with all the appurten-
ances to the same belonging to the said Solomon Shell and his heirs and assigns for-
ever. And the said David Hall for himself and for his heirs executors and adminis-
trators doth covenant to and with the said Solomon Shell his heirs and assigns that
said David Hall his heirs executors and administrators will and defend the title to
the said premises to the said Solomon Shell and his heirs assigns forever.
In witness whereof the said David Hall and Jane Hall his wife hath hereun-
to set their hands and seals the day and year first above written.

sold and conveyed and by these presents do grant bargain
