Data Review – Preble County Ohio Marriages

Have you ever gone back thru some old research to discover that you’ve missed some details that might help break thru a brick wall?

Well, I decided to review my research of Polly Crawford and her family. Polly is the sister of my ancestor, Nelson G. Crawford. Unfortunately, I don’t have a lot of research for Polly and her family.

I decided to begin my review by looking at marriage records from Preble County, Ohio to see what I could learn about Polly and her children.

In looking thru my notes, I discovered that I had pulled records for Crawford, Duggins, and Sellers surnames from Ancestry’s database Marriage Records Vol. I 1808-1830 and Vol. II 1831-1840 for Preble County, Ohio.

In looking thru this data, I recognized names for children of several known residents of Preble County Ohio: James and Sally Crawford (my ancestor, James and Martha Crawford, Nathan Sellers, and William and Sarah (Crawford) Sellers.

However, there were several Crawford and Sellers names that I didn’t recognize. Thus, I decided to use the tree on FamilySearch to see whether I could figure out who all of these people are. To my surprise, I discovered some additional families whose children were married in early Preble County, Ohio.

  • Joseph Sellers / Rachel Summers – Joseph is a brother to Nathan Sellers and William Sellers (Joseph Sellers FamilySearch LBK3-VH6)
  • David Lloyd Daniel Crawford (FamilySearch L2QD-4RS)
  • William Crawford / Isabella McClure (FamilySearch L8WF-J2M)
  • Thomas L. Crawford (FamilySearch KZYF-WRL)

Even though I can connect Joseph Sellers and his family to other Sellers families in my data, I don’t know enough about these three Crawford families to place them in my vast pool of Crawford data.

Information on FamilySearch for David Lloyd Daniel Crawford and Thomas L. Crawford indicates that these two families had at least some tie to Maryland. FamilySearch has both of these men as sons of David Crawford II (1740-1812) and Lydia Loyd and grandson of David Crawford I (1710-1785) and Jane Douglas.

On the other hand, William Crawford has Virginia ties – BOTETOURT Virginia ties. FamilySearch shows William as the son of John Crawford (1720-1796) and Margaret Jane Brown.

At this point, I have nothing to tie these three Crawford families to the other Crawford families living in Preble County, Ohio prior to 1830: James Crawford and wife Sally Duggins and James Crawford and wife Martha Knight.

So now, I not only need to update my research of Polly Crawford Stoner and her children but I need to research these other Crawford families in early Preble County, Ohio.

Below is a listing of the various families. Bold text indicates that their marriage record was found in the Ancestry resource.

Configuring Crawford FAN Club in My Tree

Do you have ‘floating’ or ‘orphan’ trees in your Ancestry tree? I know that I do have ‘floaters’ in my tree. I recently watched a Genealogy TV video by Constance Knox on how to make connections to link some of those ‘floaters’ to my big tree.

Today, I decided to get this set up for some of the members of my Crawford FAN Club:

First, I created a ‘Custom Tag’ called FanClub Crawford and attached it to each member of the FAN club.

I also added comments:

  • Explain FAN club membership
  • Explain links located at bottom of page
  • Provide link to my blog — particularly the Untangling James Crawford post when appropriate

Hopefully, this will not only help me ‘migrate’ around my tree, but also help others see potential connections among this group of people.
This process has been very helpful since it helped me put in writing the members of the fan club.

Sellers Deed

Have you ever encountered some random information in a Facebook post that led you to look for additional records? That was my experience recently when someone posted in the Families of Garrard County, Kentucky group about the Sellers-Kennedy riot.

Since my Crawford family left Garrard County before 1820, I haven’t paid much attention to the history of the county after that. One of the Crawford lines I’m tracking from the Garrard County area had two daughters marry into the Sellers family. (William Sellers married Sarah Crawford and James Sellers married Mary Crawford) These particular Sellers families also moved out of the county.

At this point, I don’t know how the Sellers of the 1873 riot connect to the Sellers family of the 1790s but I’m guessing they do connect.

One of the comments on the post mentioned the search for Sellers deeds. When I looked back at my research, I realized I did not have the deed for the sale of land. Since those records are easily accessible on FamilySearch, I located that deed today.

At first glance, this deed may be for land that belonged to James Sellers and Mary Crawford.

In 1816, James Crawford and William Sellers purchased land in Preble County Ohio as joint tenants.

the Northwest quarter of Section Fourteen of Township Seven

States in the territory north-west of the Ohio, and above the mouth of Kentucky river,” and

By the President, James Madison
Josiah Meigs Commissioner of the General Land Office

So who are James and William Sellers?

James and William Sellers are likely two of the seven identified children of Nathaniel Sellers. Nathaniel and several sons, including James, Samuel and William, appear on the early tax lists in Lincoln County, Kentucky. Two other sons, Joseph and Nathan, are on tax lists in Bourbon County, Kentucky during the same time period.

In 1791, James Sellers married Mary Crawford. Five years later (in 1796), William Sellers married Sarah Crawford. Thus, there is a connection between the Sellers and the Crawford families.

However, James and William Sellers are believed to be brothers-in-law to the James Crawford that married Martha Knight. James Sellers and Samuel Sellers witnessed the consent given by John Goodpastor for the marriage of Martha Night to James Crawford.

This is to certify that I John Goodpastor
gardien do fully give my Consnet to the
Marrage contract between James Crawford
and Martha Night as witness my hand and

The bond for the marriage of James Crawford and Martha Night was guaranteed by Nathan Douglass.

the sum of fifty pounds current money to the payment
whereof to be made to the said Governor and his sucessors we

The Condition of the above obligation is such that whereas

or else to remain in full force

Sealed Delivered
in presence of
Willes Green

The James Crawford who married Martha Knight (Night)  is believed to be the son of Rebekah Crawford and thus the brother to Mary Crawford who married James Sellers and to Sarah Crawford who married William Sellers.

Since land records show that James and Martha Crawford owned land in Barren County, it has been assumed that the James Crawford on the sale of land by Rebecca Crawford was the James Crawford married to Martha Knight.

Thus, it is believed that the children of Rebekah Crawford include James, husband of Martha, Mary and Sarah. This explains the Sellers names on the marriage consent for Martha Night.

However, it doesn’t explain a connections between James Crawford, husband of Sally Duggins, and James or William Sellers.

Thus the mystery!

At this time, my hypothesis is that my ancestors mother was a sister to James, William and Samuel Sellers. That would make James Crawford (Sally Duggins) a nephew to James Sellers who signed the marriage bond and a nephew to William Sellers who was a joint tenant.

My autosomal DNA results support this hypothesis. I have identified 9 DNA matches who trace their line back to Nathaniel David Sellers, father of James and William Sellers. This would make us some aspect of a sixth cousin. On average, we share 11.5 cM. When I checked the Shared cM Project, there is a 61.80% probability that we could be sixth cousins.  Unfortunately, I have several surnames in common with each of those matches. This makes it difficult to use the DNA to prove my hypothesis.

So, can you help unravel this mystery?

Lincoln County Taxes

Do you find little clues in tax records? When I reviewed the Lincoln County Kentucky tax records, I made some discoveries that are helping my CRAWFORD research in the area.

  • Discovered John Crawford — who owned 913 acres of land
  • Sellers families listed beginning in 1787
  • Rebekah Crawford (widow) listed in 1787-1791
  • James Crawford owning 114 acres of land  on Sugar Creek (same description as land owned by Rebekah Crawford) in 1794
  • Douglas families listed  beginning in 1789

1795 Mystery

  • William Crafort – 500 acres Richland Creek

1799 Mysteries:

  • James Crawford — 100 acres on Rolling Forks
  • Robert Crawford — 200 acres

Lincoln County Mystery

Do you have same name issues in your genealogy research? Or, do you have ‘mystery men’ of the same surname in the same location as your ancestor?

That’s what happened when I looked at the Lincoln County, Kentucky tax lists for 1787-1805.

I had found Lincoln County KY marriage bonds where Rebekah Crawford gave permission for Mary Crawford to marry James Sellers and Sarah Crawford to marry William David Sellers. Another marriage bond secured by Nathan Douglas and James Crawford for the marriage of James Crawford and Martha Knight was found in Lincoln County, KY records.

Thus, I was expecting to find the following:

  • Sellers family
  • Rebekah Crawford
  • George Douglass — who sold land to Rebekah Crawford and may be her brother
  • Nathan Douglass — who signed the bond for James Crawford
  • James Crawford — who is believed to have turned 21 in 1792

I was not expecting to find:

  • John Crofford
  • Alexander Crofford
  • William Crafort on Richland Creek
  • James Crawford on Rolling Forks
  • Robert Crawford on Hanging Fork
  • Ellis Richard (and other Ellis families) on Noland Fork

I’ve been able to locate land records for John Crofford. By following the land records, it appears that John Crofford may not have had any offspring. The land records contain powers of attorney for Ellis family members – which might help me locate information on Richard, James and Isaac Ellis.

These unexpected finds will require additional research but may provide clues to my Crawford lineage.

Migration Clues

Have you used city directories to help locate a person between census years? Although I’m not finding as much detail in tax lists, I am finding that they help track migration in the early 1800s.

I’ve been doing FAN club research in early Kentucky. So far, I’ve been concentrating on the area that became Garrard County. Because of changing county boundaries, I’ve searched tax lists for Madison, Garrard and Lincoln counties.

  • Tax Man Cometh – Madison County, KY 1787-1796
  • Garrard County Tax – 1797-1806
  • Lincoln County Taxes

Since I’ve identified the Crawford land holdings during this time period. I’m now searching the Garrard County tax lists from 1807 to 1824 to identify the time period when the various families moved away.
Families that could potentially be in Garrard County between 1807 and 1824

  • Rebekah Crawford – owned land between Sugar Creek and Boone’s Mill Creek
  • James Crawford, husband of Martha Knight and likely son of Rebekah Crawford
  • James Sellers, husband of Mary Crawford (likely daughter of Rebekah Crawford)
  • William Sellers, husband of Sarah Crawford (likely daughter of Rebekah Crawford)
  • Alexander Moore, husband of Mary Crawford – owned land on Sugar Creek and on Paint Lick Creek
  • James Crawford, husband of Sally Duggins
  • James Crawford, husband of Rebecca Anderson — owned land on Paint Lick Creek
  • William Crawford – owned land on Paint Lick Creek

I was able to find the following families:

  • James Crawford with land on Paint Lick in 1807, 1808, 1809
  • William and Isaac Crawford in 1809
  • Two Isaac Croffords listed in 1810
  • Isaac Crawford in 1811
  • Alexander Moore with land on Paint Lick in 1807
  • James Sellers with 100 acres on Sugar Creek in 1807, 1808, 1810-1817
  • James Sellers with 148 acres on Sugar Creek in  1821, 1823, and 1824
  • Wm S[?] with 100 acres on sugar Creek purchased from Downing in 1819
  • James Sellers with land in Barren County in 1807

The William and Isaac Crawford in the 1809 tax list could be the sons of the James Crawford who owned land on Paint Lick. However, I can’t explain two individuals named Isaac Crawford at that time.

Since I believe most of these families move away from Garrard County, this tax information helps me know approximately when they made the move. For example, I’ve already found records for Alexander Moore in Fleming County, KY by 1810. With this tax information, I now know that I should look for records for Alexander Moore in Fleming County starting in 1808.
Thus, my next steps should include:

  • Locating records for James Crawford in Indiana starting in 1810
  • Check Barren County records for James Sellers between 1817 and 1821
  • Continue looking for James Sellers in the Garrard County, KY tax lists
  • Research Isaac Crawford in Indiana to see if I can verify that he is the son of James Crawford
  • Research William Crawford in Missouri to see if I can verify that he is the son of James Crawford
  • Figure out who that second Isaac Crawford might be
  • Continue searching for court records, bonds or any other type of record to verify that James Seller owned land in Garrard County
  • Continue searching for records for the sale of land by James Sellers

Where Is Sellers’ Land?

Have you ever tried to document a piece of information and get frustrated because everywhere you look turns up nothing?

Well, that’s how I feel right now regarding land owned by various members of the SELLERS family in early Kentucky.

My clue that they owned land comes from various tax lists. The Sellers family appears on the Lincoln County, Kentucky tax list in 1792 on images 234 and 235.

Image 234

  • Sellers James – 1 male > 21; 6 horses, 10 cattle
  • Sellers Samuel – 1 male > 21; 1 horse
  • Sellers William – 1 male 16-21

Image 235

  • Sellers Nathaniel – 1 male > 21, 1 horse, 4 cattle 100 acres
  • Sellers, John 1 male over 21, 5 horses, 24 cattle, 100 acres

In 1795, the list changes with William owning 100 acres on Sugar Creek. Nathaniel and John are missing from the tax list.

Image 345

  • Sellers, James – 1 male > 21, 3 horses, 14 cattle
  • Sellers William 1 male > 21, 2 horses, 9 cattle Lincoln County Sugar Creek 100 acres
  • Sellers Dun – 1 male > 21, 1 horse, 1 cattle

In 1798 several Sellers family members appear on the Garrard County, KY tax list.

Image 58

  • Sellers William – 100 acres Sugar Garrard John Downing – ditto -ditto – 1 male > 21, 3 horses
  • Sellers, James – 1 male > 21, 6 horses
  • Sellers, Samuel – 1 male > 21, 3 horses
  • Saller William – 304 acres boxes Cr Nelson Thos Whitledge ditto Ditto – 1 male > 21, 4 horses

Since the tax lists indicate that several Sellers family members owned land, I’ve been trying to find the deeds for that land.

Even though the tax lists are for Lincoln and Garrard counties, shifting county boundaries mean the actual deeds could be in either of those counties and possibly in Madison County, KY. So I’ve looked at the following sources:

  • Lincoln County KY Deeds Index 1780-1870 film 192237
  • Madison County KY Deeds Grantee Index K-Z, 1787-1899 film 183282
  • Garrard County KY Index to Deeds, Grantors, O-Z 1797-1935 film 183241
  • Madison County KY Grantor Index, L-Z 1787-1899 film 183280
  • Garrard County Ky Index to Deeds Grantees O-Z 1797-1935 film 9021

So far, I haven’t found any deeds to verify that these Sellers men owned land. Suggestions on other ways to approach this problem would be appreciated.

Garrard County Tax

Have you ever tried to figure out who is who in a community when there are multiple people of the same name?

Well, that’s where I am with the Garrard County tax records from 1797-1806.

I have four Crawford families that potentially live in Garrard County during that time period.

  • James Crawford husband of Rebecca Anderson who purchased land from Thomas Kennedy. James‘ sons were Isaac (?-?), William (1784-1864) and James (1790-1856)
  • William Crawford who claimed to have purchased land from J Kennedy. His sons would not have been old enough to be listed on the tax lists while William Crawford was living in Garrard County.
  • James Crawford who married Martha Knight in 1793 in Lincoln County, Kentucky. James is thought to be the son of Rebecca CrawfordRebecca purchased land from George Douglas.
  • James Crawford who married Sally Duggins in 1799 in Garrard County, Kentucky. James is thought to be the son of Mary Crawford who married Alexander Moore.

I did find four families but not the above four families.
Now, my task is to figure out who I found. Two of the families were obvious because of the land references.

  • James Crawford on image 11 was shown with 146 acres of land on Paint Lick. The original grantor of the land was Thos Kennedy. Since I have a copy of a deed where this land was purchased and another deed for the sale of land that names Rebecca, I believe the James Crawford shown owning land on Paint Lick is the James Crawford whose wife was Rebecca.
  • William Crawford is shown on image 12 with 1808 acres on Paint Lick. The original grantor of this land was John Kennedy. In 1795, a court case was filed between the Kennedy’s and William Crawford over the land. I believe the William Crawford named in the court case is the William Crawford shown on the tax list in 1797.

James and William Crawford are in the same taxing district as the Kennedys, including Thomas Kennedy, Bazeleel Maxwell and Alexander Moor. Thomas Kennedy is who James Crawford purchased land from. Bazeleel Maxwell’s wife was an Anderson. Both James Crawford and Bazeleel Maxwell are named in a deed from 1798 that identifies heirs of John Anderson. Alexander Moor is likely the Alexander Moore that married Mary Crawford in 1793.

A second James Crawford appears on image 41 of  the 1797 tax list. This James Crawford is shown with 140 acres on Sugar Creek. The original grantor for this land was identified as Jacob Myres. Since George Douglas is found on image 43 with 200 acres of land with the same original grantor (Jacob Myres), I believe this James Crawford to be the son of Rebekah Crawford.

Also found in this same set of tax records are James and William Sellers. James and William married Mary and Sarah Crawford, respectively. Rebekah Crawford gave permission for Mary and Sarah to marry.

Since this second James Crawford isn’t always listed with land, I used the proximity to Douglas and Sellers family to identify this James Crawford.

The fourth CRAWFORD family found was in 1806. William Crawford is listed on the same page as the James Crawford who purchased land from T Kennedy. James had a son William who was born in April 1784, making him old enough to appear the tax list in 1806. Another son, James, was born in 1790. Thus, he could be the male over 16 listed with James Crawford on image 425.

Based on the above analysis, a James Crawford is missing. This is likely the James Crawford thought to be the son of Mary Crawford Moore and the James Crawford who married Sally Duggins in 1799.

James Crawford, likely husband of Martha Knight, is not found on the tax roles after 1801. [Or he disappears earlier and the James Crawford who married Sally Duggins is listed for a couple of years before disappearing off of the list.]

In 1799, there is a John Crawford listed on the same page as James Crawford. At this time, I have no idea who this John Crawford is.

After studying these tax records, there are some questions that need answered:

  • Where is the missing James Crawford?
  • What happened to the 140 acres of land on Sugar Creek that James Crawford is listed with?
  • Where is Isaac Crawford — suspected son of James and Rebecca (Anderson) Crawford who was married in 1808 in Garrard County, KY?
  • Who is the John Crawford listed on the 1799 tax list?
