Tax Lists

Do you find the early tax lists a useful source in your genealogy research? Even though I included tax lists in my research arsenal, I have to admit that at first they were pretty useless. However, now, looking back at the early research, they are useful in helping document residency.

So what changed? Did I all of a sudden become a better researcher? Not likely. Instead, I learned more about the families and can now figure out the who’s who for some of those tax lists.

In 1827, the following Crawford names are found on the tax list for Gasper township in Preble County, Ohio.

  • Crawford, James
  • Crawford, James
  • Crawford, John D.
  • Crawford, William A.

In 1828, the two James Crawfords are identified as James Crawford Sr and James Crawford Jr. In 1832, a fifth name is added to the list: Nelson Crawford. By that time John, William and one of the James are missing from the list.

Audrey S. Gilbert, Preble County, Ohio, Personal Property Tax List, 1827-1850, volumes 1-3 (Utica, Kentucky: McDowell Publications, 1987–1988), Gasper township 1827-1850.

So does the Sr/Jr designation indicate father/son? Is it James Jr who moved away leaving James Sr behind? The answer to both questions is No. Again, the only reason I can now answer those questions is because I have researched these families. I still don’t know which James is James Sr and which is James Jr, but the two James Crawfords are my ancestor, James Crawford (1772-1854) who stayed in Preble county and James Crawford (1770-1833) who moved to Warren County, Indiana. Because the James who moved to Indiana is the older of the two men, I assume he is James Sr in the tax lists.

James (1770-1833), his sons John D. and William A. along with my ancestor, Nelson Crawford, all have land entries indicating that they purchased land in Warren County, Indiana. Even though they each have multiple entries, they all have an 1830 entry.

While these tax lists aren’t very helpful on their own, they do show that several Gasper township Crawfords left while one stayed behind.

Because tax lists were created annually, they have proven helpful in filling gaps in census records. Thus, I will continue to utilize tax lists even though I know from experience that I need other sources to help figure out what the tax list is revealing.

Re-Visiting Tax Lists

Do you ever find yourself retracing your research steps because you learn about a new family connection? Yep, that’s me. I’m going back thru the early tax lists for Madison County, KY.

I wrote about my journey with suspected CRAWFORD family members in my January 2019 post, Tax Man Cometh. At the time, I mentioned finding Edward Crawford in a different taxing district from the other Crawfords. I didn’t pursue Edward for several reasons. Since he wasn’t shown as a land owner, I wouldn’t find any deeds for him. I also didn’t have any information tying Edward to any of the other Crawfords in those early tax records.

Now, I have yDNA evidence showing a relationship to Edward Crawford of Overton, Tennessee. From what I’ve been able to learn about this Edward Crawford, his birthplace is thought to be Pennsylvania or Virginia.

I have NO evidence that the Edward Crawford in the Madison County tax lists is the same Edward Crawford who died in Overton County, Tennessee. I also currently have NO evidence that they are not the same person.

Thus, I’m going to revisit the tax lists to see if I can learn anything more about the Edward Crawford of Madison County, Kentucky.

As mentioned in my previous post, I found several Crawfords listed in these Madison County, KY tax lists.

  • Mary Crawford (found 1787-1792)
  • James Crawford (found 1787-1796)
  • William Crawford (found (1787-1796)
  • James Crawford – appears in 1792
  • Alexander Crawford – appears in 1792
  • John Crawford – appears in 1795
  • William Crawford Jr – appears in 1795
  • Edward Crawford — appears in 1795 –  under a different commissioner’s list

Edward is the only Crawford who appears on the 1797 tax list. Edward is also listed on the 1799 tax list but has not been found after that date.
Since the first wife of Edward Crawford of Overton, TN was named Mary Gentry, I also looked for any GENTRY families on these Madison County, KY tax lists. I found several GENTRY families with most owning land.

Botetourt Virginia Titheables

Last Wednesday, I had the opportunity to visit the Family History Center in Topeka, Kansas. During this visit, I was able to access digitized images from Botetourt County, Virginia. I was thankful these records were available at the family history center since they were locked at affiliate libraries.

Dooley

Have you ever seen a name in a deed or court document and thought to yourself, ‘Hey, I’ve seen that name before?’ Well that was my situation when I was looking at tax records for Barren County, Kentucky.

Since I found James Crawford with 200 acres of land on the Marrowbone listed on the 1800 tax list for Barren County, KY, I started looking for other people owning land on the Marrowbone. That’s when I found Moses Dooly Junr also owning 200 acres of land on the Marrowbone.

Not only was Moses Dooly Junr in Barren County, but so was his father and brothers.

I remembered the Dooly name from my Garrard County map of the original land owners. Moses Dooly had a land grant (#912) for land in the line fork of Sugar Creek.

This land is near the Mary Crawford land purchased from Richard Cave. Mary’s land would be to the East of Moses Dooley’s land. Just to the Southwest of Moses Dooley’s land is the land grant for Jacob Myers. Some of this land was sold to George Douglas. George Douglas then sold a portion to Rebekah Crawford.

So when I saw Moses Dooly Junr as a potential neighbor to James Crawford, I started paying attention to the Dooly family. Since James and Martha Crawford sold 200 hundred acres of land on the Marrowbone (see Barren County Connection), I believe the James Crawford in the tax record is the James Crawford married to Martha Knight. However, I haven’t found the deed for James’ purchase of the land. Thus, I can’t say for certain which James Crawford is listed in the tax record.

As I was researching the two James Crawfords in Preble County, Ohio, I discovered the Dooly family on the tax records in Preble County, Ohio. The 1816 Preble County, Ohio tax list shows Moses Dooley Senr and Moses Dooley along with several other members of the family.

Since I’ve found the Dooley family and likely both James Crawford families in Barren County, KY and Preble County, OH, I began wondering if Moses Dooley was on the tax lists for Lincoln or Madison Counties. Thus, I returned to the tax lists for Lincoln County, KY where I had previously found George Douglas and Rebekah Crawford along with some Sellars families in 1787. I didn’t find any Dooley names living near Rebekah Crawford in 1787. So, I checked Madison County, KY where I found Moses Dooley and John Doly in 1787.

This places Moses Dooley in the same taxing district as Mary Crawford, James Crawford and William Crawford in 1787.

This may all be coincidence, but it appears that the Dooley clan followed the same migration path from the Garrard County, Kentucky area in 1787 to the Barren County, Kentucky area in 1799 to Preble County, Ohio in 1816.
Thus, I’ve added the Dooley surname to my FAN club.

More Taxes

Well, I’m chasing those Crawfords thru another set of Kentucky tax lists. This time, I’m looking in Pulaski County, Kentucky. Another Crawford researcher told me that the William Crawford found in the Madison County, Kentucky tax lists moved to Pulaski County prior to moving to Missouri.

On the off chance that I would find some of the other Crawford families in Pulaski County, I read the 1799-1822 tax lists. In addition to William Crawford,  I found an Alexander Crawford who may be the same Alexander Crawford on the 1792 Madison County, Kentucky tax list.

The information I found regarding William Crawford shows that he paid taxes in Pulaski county for 1799-1802. William also owned 400 acres of land in Pulaski County. Since William does not appear on the Garrard County, KY tax lists after 1797, the Pulaski County information fills in the gaps between Garrard County and his arrival in Ste. Genevieve. However, I need to locate additional records to confirm this is the same William.

Alexander Crawford appears on the 1799 tax list with 200 acres of land on Buck Creek. Alexander is shown on the tax list with this 200 acres thru 1809. However, the Alexander Crawford listed in 1810 is not shown as owning any land. This Alexander Crawford without land continues to appear on the lists thru 1822.

There are potential sons for Alexander Crawford who do appear on the tax lists. James Crofford makes an appearance in 1805 as a male over 16. However, James Crofford is not listed on the same page as Alexander Crawford. This is the only listing for James Crofford.

Adams Crawford appears on the tax list in 1811 as a male over 21. Alexander Crawford is listed on the same page, but there are two names between Alexander and Adams Crawford.

In 1814, Adams Crawford is listed along with a Joseph Crawford on the next page. Alexander Crawford was not found for this tax year.

In 1815, there are four Crawford listings: Adams, Joseph, Alexander and John. Adams and Alexander Crawford continue to be listed on the tax lists thru 1822.

In 1819, there is another clue about this potential family: Nancy Crawford. Nancy Crawford only appears on the 1819 list. Joseph no longer appears. Could Nancy be his widow?

There isn’t enough information to conclude anything about Alexander. However, there are hints pointing to land records. These tax lists also suggest potential sons for Alexander.

Lincoln County Taxes

Do you find little clues in tax records? When I reviewed the Lincoln County Kentucky tax records, I made some discoveries that are helping my CRAWFORD research in the area.

  • Discovered John Crawford — who owned 913 acres of land
  • Sellers families listed beginning in 1787
  • Rebekah Crawford (widow) listed in 1787-1791
  • James Crawford owning 114 acres of land  on Sugar Creek (same description as land owned by Rebekah Crawford) in 1794
  • Douglas families listed  beginning in 1789

1795 Mystery

  • William Crafort – 500 acres Richland Creek

1799 Mysteries:

  • James Crawford — 100 acres on Rolling Forks
  • Robert Crawford — 200 acres

Barren

Have you ever re-looked at some tax records and discovered that you can now figure out who these people might be when before they were just a list of names found in that county?

Well, that has been my experience as I’m going back thru some of my Crawford Kentucky research in hopes that it leads me back another generation.

I’ve recently re-looked at Madison, Lincoln and Garrard county tax lists and combined with land records, I have a much better understanding of who the various Crawfords listed in these tax roles are. Since I have deeds indicating James Crawford (husband of Martha Knight) lived in Barren County, Kentucky, I decided to re-look at those tax records.

I first searched the Barren County KY tax lists some time ago. Based on the “V20-0014” notation on my notes, I’m guessing I used the American Genealogical Lending Library to research these records at home.

Unfortunately, at the time, I didn’t know enough about the family for this information to help me.

Since that time, I’ve discovered a couple of land records that place James Crawford in Barren County, KY. The first one I found was for the sale of 200 acres of land on the Marrowbone in 1821. The second deed was for the sale of Rebecca (Rebekah) Crawford’s land in Garrard County, KY in 1804.

These deeds and my additional knowledge about the families and neighbors has made easier for me to figure out the Barren County, KY tax records.

  • David Crawford who is listed in 1799 and later is an unknown (image 10)
  • James Crawford who is found on image 31 with 200 acres on the Marrowbone
  • The Dooley and Douglass families are found in these early tax lists.
  • By 1800, James Crawford owned an additional 50 acres on the Marrowbone and 200 acres in Cumberland County (image 67)
  • By 1802 William Sellers is listed with 100 acres of land in Barren County (image 141)
  • By 1802, there is a second James Crawford (image 119)
  • By 1805 James Crawford Jr is listed with 50 acres of land on the Marrowbone (image 275)
  • By 1806, William Sellers is no longer listed as owning land on the Marrowbone. There is a James Crawford owning 50 acres of land on the Marrowbone (image 335)
  • In 1806, there is a James Crawfford owning 190 acres of land on the East Fork of the Barren River (image 372)
  • By 1808, no Crawfords are listed owning land on the Marrowbone

Based on this information, I’ve developed some theories:

  • James Crawford shown in the tax list owning 200 acres on the Marrowbone is the James Crawford who sold 200 acres of land on the Marrowbone in 1821
  • James Crawford listed as ‘little’ or ‘junior’ is the other James Crawford who migrated to Preble County – the one married to Sally Smith Duggins
  • William Sellers is the William Sellers who purchased land in Ohio as a tenant in common with James Crawford
  • The Dooley and Douglas families in the Barren County tax records are the same Dooley and Douglas families from Garrard County, KY
  • James and Martha left Barren County earlier than James and Sally – thus arriving in Preble County earlier

I will need to find land and/or court records to help prove these theories.

Arrival in Ohio

Have you ever ‘lost’ an ancestor for a period of time? That’s my situation with my ancestor, James Crawford.

James and Sally Duggins are married in Garrard County, Kentucky in 1799. In 1813, there is a land record where James Crawford has made full payment for the NW 1/4 of Section 14, Township 7, Range 2. Thus, I’m trying to figure out where James and Sally were living shortly after their marriage. The county history suggests that James was living in Preble county by 1810. Unfortunately, there are TWO James Crawfords living near each other. This makes it difficult to determine which James Crawford is being referenced.

Since Kentucky tax lists have been helping me figure out who was living where in Lincoln, Garrard and Madison counties. Unfortunately, the Preble County, Ohio tax lists do not begin until 1816.

However, these tax lists contain two clues that I overlooked the first time I used them.

  • James Crawford owning the NORTHWEST quarter of Section 14, Township 7, Range 2 appeared on the tax lists at a later time than the James Crawford owning the SOUTHWEST quarter of the same section
  • The James Crawford owning the NORTHWEST quarter was referred to as James Crawford Junior

When I first used these tax lists, I likely hadn’t figured out who owned which piece of ground. That knowledge is essential to understanding these tax lists.

  • James Crawford and Sally Duggins purchased the NW 1/2 of Section 14, Township 7, Range 2 as tenants in common with William Sellers in 1813.
  • James Crawford and Martha Knight purchased the SW 1/4 Section 14, Township 7, Range 2 in 1811

These tax lists reinforced what I and other researchers have assumed:
My James Crawford ancestor was the one referred to as Junior
Unfortunately, I still don’t know where James and Sally were living between 1799 and 1813.
My notes from the tax lists thru 1820:

Lincoln County Mystery

Do you have same name issues in your genealogy research? Or, do you have ‘mystery men’ of the same surname in the same location as your ancestor?

That’s what happened when I looked at the Lincoln County, Kentucky tax lists for 1787-1805.

I had found Lincoln County KY marriage bonds where Rebekah Crawford gave permission for Mary Crawford to marry James Sellers and Sarah Crawford to marry William David Sellers. Another marriage bond secured by Nathan Douglas and James Crawford for the marriage of James Crawford and Martha Knight was found in Lincoln County, KY records.

Thus, I was expecting to find the following:

  • Sellers family
  • Rebekah Crawford
  • George Douglass — who sold land to Rebekah Crawford and may be her brother
  • Nathan Douglass — who signed the bond for James Crawford
  • James Crawford — who is believed to have turned 21 in 1792

I was not expecting to find:

  • John Crofford
  • Alexander Crofford
  • William Crafort on Richland Creek
  • James Crawford on Rolling Forks
  • Robert Crawford on Hanging Fork
  • Ellis Richard (and other Ellis families) on Noland Fork

I’ve been able to locate land records for John Crofford. By following the land records, it appears that John Crofford may not have had any offspring. The land records contain powers of attorney for Ellis family members – which might help me locate information on Richard, James and Isaac Ellis.

These unexpected finds will require additional research but may provide clues to my Crawford lineage.

Migration Clues

Have you used city directories to help locate a person between census years? Although I’m not finding as much detail in tax lists, I am finding that they help track migration in the early 1800s.

I’ve been doing FAN club research in early Kentucky. So far, I’ve been concentrating on the area that became Garrard County. Because of changing county boundaries, I’ve searched tax lists for Madison, Garrard and Lincoln counties.

  • Tax Man Cometh – Madison County, KY 1787-1796
  • Garrard County Tax – 1797-1806
  • Lincoln County Taxes

Since I’ve identified the Crawford land holdings during this time period. I’m now searching the Garrard County tax lists from 1807 to 1824 to identify the time period when the various families moved away.
Families that could potentially be in Garrard County between 1807 and 1824

  • Rebekah Crawford – owned land between Sugar Creek and Boone’s Mill Creek
  • James Crawford, husband of Martha Knight and likely son of Rebekah Crawford
  • James Sellers, husband of Mary Crawford (likely daughter of Rebekah Crawford)
  • William Sellers, husband of Sarah Crawford (likely daughter of Rebekah Crawford)
  • Alexander Moore, husband of Mary Crawford – owned land on Sugar Creek and on Paint Lick Creek
  • James Crawford, husband of Sally Duggins
  • James Crawford, husband of Rebecca Anderson — owned land on Paint Lick Creek
  • William Crawford – owned land on Paint Lick Creek

I was able to find the following families:

  • James Crawford with land on Paint Lick in 1807, 1808, 1809
  • William and Isaac Crawford in 1809
  • Two Isaac Croffords listed in 1810
  • Isaac Crawford in 1811
  • Alexander Moore with land on Paint Lick in 1807
  • James Sellers with 100 acres on Sugar Creek in 1807, 1808, 1810-1817
  • James Sellers with 148 acres on Sugar Creek in  1821, 1823, and 1824
  • Wm S[?] with 100 acres on sugar Creek purchased from Downing in 1819
  • James Sellers with land in Barren County in 1807

The William and Isaac Crawford in the 1809 tax list could be the sons of the James Crawford who owned land on Paint Lick. However, I can’t explain two individuals named Isaac Crawford at that time.

Since I believe most of these families move away from Garrard County, this tax information helps me know approximately when they made the move. For example, I’ve already found records for Alexander Moore in Fleming County, KY by 1810. With this tax information, I now know that I should look for records for Alexander Moore in Fleming County starting in 1808.
Thus, my next steps should include:

  • Locating records for James Crawford in Indiana starting in 1810
  • Check Barren County records for James Sellers between 1817 and 1821
  • Continue looking for James Sellers in the Garrard County, KY tax lists
  • Research Isaac Crawford in Indiana to see if I can verify that he is the son of James Crawford
  • Research William Crawford in Missouri to see if I can verify that he is the son of James Crawford
  • Figure out who that second Isaac Crawford might be
  • Continue searching for court records, bonds or any other type of record to verify that James Seller owned land in Garrard County
  • Continue searching for records for the sale of land by James Sellers
